Resolution # 1 – Get rid of stuff you no longer want or use.
The less stuff you need to move, the more you save on moving. Whether you’re the DIY type or hire professional movers, less stuff means less work. Make your “keep” “pitch” and “donate” piles so when it is time to pack up boxes, everything goes, no wasting time trying to decide what you no longer need or use. Have a garage sale, donate items to charity and recycle what you can.
When? Do this long before you start packing or even know the exact date you’re moving.
Resolution #2 – Make packing a priority.
Slow and steady wins the race when it comes to packing. And since you will need to pack virtually everything that is not furniture into a moving box of some kind, the sooner you start, the better. When? Start packing when the moving date is in sight (or before!).
Resolution #3 – Get estimates often and early.
No matter what method of moving you are considering – DIY truck rental vs. full service professional movers – evaluate the costs carefully. Often, renting a truck and calling in your family and friends costs about the same as having the pro’s do it. Bonus: you will be free to focus on more important things. With more lead-time, you can have companies give you in-person estimates that have fixed prices rather than “hourly rates apply” type pricing. Ask for a cap! (See glossary of moving terms here).
When? At least two weeks before your scheduled move date, preferably a month.
